SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – A popular Hillcrest bar and restaurant has been ordered to close after failing a health inspection due to serious pest violations.
The Gossip Grill at 1220 University Ave. was closed Wednesday after a re-inspection, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality. The location is widely recognized by the local LGBTQ+ community.
Health inspectors said the site had “significant” pest violations that required immediate corrective action or closure under California law — at least pending compliance.
The report states that the presence of rodents, insects, birds or other animals may contaminate food or food preparation surfaces. The exact type of pest found in the restaurant was not listed in the report.

The situation appears to have escalated after county officials conducted an inspection of Gossip Grill in March and reported “minor” pest violations.
Officials explained that regulations require food facilities to be properly constructed, maintained and operated to prevent pests from entering and harboring. Businesses must also keep their premises clean and pest-free.
Businesses will be required to correct violations and pass subsequent inspections before they can reopen. It’s unclear how long the popular LGBTQ+ friendly bar will be closed.
FOX 5/KUSI has reached out to the restaurant for comment but has been unable to be reached.
