Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 5G phone service on Saturday, ushering in an era of superfast internet on mobile phones.

According to an official release, the Prime Minister will roll out 5G in select cities on Saturday and will gradually cover the country over the next few years.

The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to reach $450 billion (nearly Rs 36,612 billion) by 2035.

Fifth-generation or 5G services, capable of supporting ultra-fast internet, are expected to unlock new economic opportunities and social benefits and be a transformative force in Indian society.

The country’s three major telecom operators will each present a use case in front of the Prime Minister to demonstrate the potential of India’s 5G technology.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio will connect teachers at a school in Mumbai with students at three different locations in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha.

According to official sources, this will demonstrate how 5G will facilitate education by bringing teachers and students closer and the physical distance between them. It will showcase on-screen the power of augmented reality (AR) and how children across the country can be taught remotely without the need for an AR device.

In the Airtel demo, a girl from Uttar Pradesh will witness a vivid and immersive educational experience to learn about the solar system through virtual and augmented reality. The girl will appear on dias through a hologram to share her learning experience with the prime minister.

The Vodafone Idea test case will demonstrate the safety of workers in a tunnel under construction in Delhi Metro by creating a “digital twin” of the tunnel on dias. The digital twin will help in real-time safety alerts to workers from remote locations.

Modi will give a live demonstration through dias to monitor work in real time by leveraging VR and artificial intelligence.

5G offers speeds several times faster than 4G, supports lag-free connections, and enables billions of connected devices to share data in real-time.

It will help provide seamless coverage, high data rates, low latency and highly reliable communications. In addition, it will improve energy efficiency, spectral efficiency and network efficiency.

5G technology will help connect billions of IoT devices, provide higher-quality video services and high-speed mobility, and provide critical services such as remote surgery and self-driving cars.

It will aid in real-time monitoring of disasters, precision agriculture, and minimise the role of humans in hazardous industrial operations such as deep mines, offshore activities, and more. Unlike existing mobile communication networks, 5G networks will allow customization for each of these different use cases within the same network.

The Interministerial Committee on 5G Use Cases, operational from 2021, in coordination with 12 central ministries, supports the establishment of 5G Use Cases Labs. has been consulted to enable the 5G ecosystem to provide handsets.

C-DOT is also working with local and startups to develop the 5G Access Network (RAN). It has successfully tested 4G Core in partnership with TCS and Tejas Networks.
