Phillies agree to 6-year contract with opening day starter Cristopher Sánchez

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have signed opener starter Christopher Sanchez to a new six-year contract.

The deal announced Sunday for last season’s National League Cy Young Award runner-up will begin in 2027 and run through 2032, with a club option in 2033.

Terms were not immediately announced.

Sanchez signed a four-year contract worth $22.5 million through 2028.

He went 13-5 with a 2.50 ERA in 32 starts last season and struck out a career-high 212 batters. He compiled a 30-21 record in four full seasons in the majors.

Sanchez was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an amateur free agent in 2013 and was traded to the Phillies for infielder Curtis Mead on November 20, 2019.

Mead only played 41 games for the Chicago White Sox last season, while Sanchez has developed into one of the best pitchers in baseball and helped the Phillies win back-to-back NL East titles in 2024 and 2025.

The Phillies hope to keep their postseason momentum going — four straight appearances heading into 2026 — and have locked up all their veteran staffers on long-term contracts.

Earlier this month, Jesus Luzardo finalized a five-year contract worth $135 million starting in 2027. Zack Wheeler’s contract is worth $126 million through 2027 and Aaron Nola’s contract is worth $172 million through 2030 on a seven-year deal. Rookie Andrew Painter will be under team control until 2031 and earns the fifth starting spot in the rotation.
