Manchester United’s loss to Leeds highlighted just how thin and weak their defense is.
In the absence of Harry Maguire, Lenny Yoro started alongside Lisandro Martinez. Dominic Calvert-Lewin proved to be a difficult player for both defenders, but he couldn’t beat the Leeds forward.

Martinez briefly pulled the Englishman’s hair while trying to stop Calvert-Lewin, eventually receiving a red card after VAR intervened.
Considering Maguire’s aging legs, Martinez’s fitness issues and Yoro’s inconsistent performance, United would be wise to bring in a reliable centre-back ahead of next season.
Manchester United join race for Ousmane Diomande
Manchester United have set their sights on Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande, according to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness).
Crystal Palace looked set to sign Diomande last summer, but the Eagles were unable to agree a proposed deal worth £43m due to uncertainty over Mark Gay’s future. Their captain eventually moved to Manchester City in January.

Meanwhile, Diomande has extended his contract in Lisbon until 2030. However, his release clause is still €80 million (£69 million).
After another promising campaign in Portugal and Europe, the 22-year-old Ivorian is starting to attract more sharks.
According to Record Now , Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Arsenal are all keeping tabs on Diomande, making it difficult for Crystal Palace to quietly secure the services of the highly-rated defender.
Ousmane Diomande on sale for £43m
The six-foot-three defender is known for his aerial dominance and solid positioning.
Additionally, the Ivory Coast international is comfortable with the ball at his feet and has an excellent passing range to beat the press. He has been described as an “absolute freak” with the ball.

There are questions about his health record, but this season has also been relatively encouraging in that regard. He made 24 appearances in all competitions. Another impressive performance against Arsenal in the Champions League could further boost his reputation.
Interestingly, Sporting remain flexible despite his £69m release clause. It is suggested that they are willing to negotiate in the range of €40m to €50m (£34m to £43m).
United have also been heavily linked with Bournemouth’s left-footed centre-back Marcos Senesi, who is set to join on a free transfer this summer.
