An ambitious project to dismantle a submarine has been halted due to safety concerns over internal reactor materials.
Local officials in Scotland say it is unsafe and unnecessary to remove the most radioactive components from the submarine because there is no reliable place to store them.
Local councilor Brian Goodall has rejected a proposal that would have released higher levels of radioactivity into the environment, the Dunfermline Press reports. At Rosyth Shipyard, there are seven old nuclear submarines on site, with more scheduled to be decommissioned soon.
The shipyard has been dismantling nuclear submarines for the past decade. But demolition plans have been put on hold due to a lack of safe facilities for further disposal of radioactive waste.
The MP halted the second phase of the process due to the risk of unsafe radioactive emissions. He also opposed any additional nuclear submarines coming to Rosyth Dockyard.
Preventing exposure to radioactive waste is a positive step because it addresses significant concerns about nuclear energy.
Nuclear power is a reliable and sustainable energy source that generally has a smaller environmental impact than coal, oil and natural gas. However, nuclear waste must be managed to make this type of electricity safer and more widely accepted as a clean energy option.
In Scotland, MPs opposed to additional exposure to radioactive waste have faced pushback.
Graeme Downie, another local official, said: “It is disappointing that Councilor Goodall on the one hand acknowledges that Rosyth should be a center of excellence for submarine dismantling and supports hundreds of jobs, but then goes on to say that the workforce is not equipped to do the work required safely and reliably.”
Fortunately, scientists have been researching ways to manage radioactive waste more safely and responsibly, such as using molecular crystals to capture harmful byproducts.
Meanwhile, innovators have been figuring out how to turn radioactive waste into useful, everyday products.

“With the site just meters away from homes, schools, shops and countless other businesses nearby, Rosyth should never have become a nuclear facility and radioactive waste repository,” Goodall said. “We should do everything we can now to create a long-term, positive, clean, green future for the shipyard.”
