Obama intel chief angered president at meeting by asking if he’d tolerate Iran having nuclear weapon

Former Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair angered then-President Barack Obama by pressing him during a White House meeting on Iran about whether he would tolerate the country acquiring nuclear weapons, according to newly released oral history interviews.

“When it was my turn to speak at this conference,” Blair said, “I said, ‘Mr. President, you really just have to make a decision … are you going to tolerate Iran having a nuclear weapon?'” He added that rejecting a nuclear-armed Iran would require espionage and military options, while acceptance would mean developing a strategy to contain and deter Iran.

The exchange, documented in interviews conducted by the Miller Center at the University of Virginia and reported by The New York Times, provides a window into divisions within the Obama administration as officials debate how to respond to Iran’s nuclear program.

Blair said the moment prompted a stern warning from Obama.

“After the meeting, the president pulled me aside and said, ‘Danny, don’t put me in this situation again,'” he recalled. “I said… ‘Yes, sir, Mr. President. Of course I won’t.'” He added, “I’ve been banned from meetings since then.”

Blair called the meeting an opportunity to provide input on Iran policy, wrongly assuming that Obama was honestly seeking “new insights.”

Blair served as Obama’s director of national intelligence since he took office in 2009 until resigning at Obama’s request in May 2010.

Obama will continue negotiating the Iran nuclear deal during his second term, which his administration hailed as a landmark diplomatic achievement that limited the country’s nuclear ambitions while avoiding bloodshed. Its critics have blasted the deal as mere appeasement, providing unearned sanctions relief to the world’s largest sponsor of terror.

The oral histories released also include transcripts of political discussions within the Obama White House, including deliberations over Vice President Joe Biden’s potential 2016 presidential bid.

Top political strategist David Plouffe urged Biden not to enter the race, telling him, “There’s no room. There’s no room for you.”

Plouffe added: “I’m worried about you as a human being. I’m not sure you’re in a condition where you can run.”

Biden mourned the death of his son Beau in 2015 and announced later that year that he would not run in the Democratic race, which ultimately led to a tight race between Obama’s favored candidate Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
