Former India player Suresh Raina believes India’s star player Suryakumar Yadav needs to be in the Test after getting a taste of success in white-ball cricket, saying “none of the three models should exist” without batsmen. Suryakumar had an amazing year with the bat breaking a string of records and setting unprecedented benchmarks in the T20I format. He became just the second hitter among to hit more than 1,000 runs in a calendar year, and finished the year with 1,164 runs on a ridiculous 187.43 hit rate, the most by a running back.

“Of course, the way he plays. I think he should play in all three modes, and none of those three modes should exist without him. The way he plays, the way he shows his intent, the way he plans different shots , he also plays fearlessly and knows how to take of the size of the court,” Raina said in a chat with Aakash Chopra on Viacom18 Sports.

“He’s a Mumbai player and he knows how to play red ball cricket. I think he has a great chance – playing Test cricket will give him another achievement and some consistency in ODIs. He’ll get multiple 100s, then 200s,” he added.

Pragyan Ojha agreed with Raina, saying: “He definitely deserves to be in the Test squad. The way he plays cricket, the way he plays, I think he has to be there in all three formats. I can see why. The problem. The way talent Sarfaraz Khan is doing at the moment. I know the temptation is there and I think his time will come. But Surya deserves 100 per cent to be in the Test team.”

In the 2022 Australian ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Yadav played at his peak, scoring 3 50 points in 6 rounds, averaging nearly 60 points per game. Notably, his strike rate is 189.68, again at a very high level.
