Starting with the app on Android, Netflix may soon add a sleep timer to its service. Although little is known about the feature, the basic description indicates that the feature will allow users to set the playback duration, after which Netflix will automatically stop playback. This will naturally be based on the streaming service’s “Are you still watching?” This feature can pause playback after a period of inactivity until the user prompts the application to continue operation, and provides a more controllable experience for the service.
According to XDA Developers, a string of code was found in the v7.82.1 APK of the Netflix app for Android, indicating that the feature may be under development. The code can only display the words “sleep timer button” and does not reveal much, so it has not even been provided as a function of the application, so it is difficult to determine how it works when activated.
If you turn on the autoplay feature, this feature is also very important to a large extent, because it will continuously play content such as episodes of TV programs. Setting a timer on the player will automatically turn off playback after a predetermined time, instead of relying on the “Are you still watching?” pop-up feature. This is especially useful for monitoring your child’s viewing time and for late night partying when you may fall asleep in front of the screen.
The report shows that this feature is still a long way from being widely introduced because there is very little code at this stage. At the same time, it is also possible to completely shelve this feature, but this implies that Netflix is thinking at least in these areas.
Netflix recently launched Netflix Direct from France, which is a linear product similar to TV channels. The service has a curated collection of movies and TV shows designed to operate like a traditional linear TV channel and can attract users who don’t want to specifically decide what to watch. Although it is currently only available in France, the service may soon be available globally.
