NASCAR set to open season with sold-out crowd for Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — William Byron will try to win his third consecutive Daytona 500 in front of a sold-out crowd on Sunday.

Daytona International Speedway announced Wednesday that all reserved grandstand seats for the 68th edition of the Great American Race have been sold.

Although grandstand and camping tickets for Sunday’s big event are sold out, limited upgrades and premium packages are still available. More than 100,000 fans are expected to flock to Daytona.

Byron won last year’s race in overtime when leader Denny Hamlin spun on the final lap, triggering a multi-car crash. Byron eventually passed eight cars on the final lap and returned to victory lane.

Comedian Nate Bargatze will serve as the grand marshal, instructing drivers to start their engines. Actor Kurt Russell will serve as an honorary pace car driver, and country singer Miranda Lambert will perform a pre-race concert. Miss America Cassie Donegan will sing the national anthem.

The purse amounted to $31,045,575, the largest purse in Daytona 500 history.
