NASA’s robotic spacecraft Osiris-Rex will begin a detailed operation on Tuesday to store precious particles dug up from the asteroid Bennu, but when the flaps are wedged At times, they will leak into space.
The mission of the probe is to collect debris. Scientists hope that these debris will help clarify the origin of our solar system, but after the collected samples were too large, they encountered obstacles.
The debris on the surface of the asteroid is located in the collector at the end of the probe’s three-meter (10-foot) arm. It slowly escaped into space because some rocks prevented the cabin from being completely enclosed.
Last Tuesday, this arm was in contact with Bennu for a few seconds, when the mission launched from Earth four years ago reached its climax.
NASA previously stated that the probe is believed to have collected about 400 grams (14 ounces) of debris, far exceeding the minimum required 60 grams of debris.
Scientists need to store the sample in a capsule located in the center of the probe. Due to a leak, the operation has been postponed from the planned November 2nd to Tuesday.
“The large amount of material we collected from Bennu made it possible for us to speed up the storage decision,” said project leader Dante Lauretta.
OSIRIS-REx will return home in September 2023, hopefully this is the largest sample returned from space since the Apollo era.
NASA said that the storage operation will take several days, because unlike some other automated operations of OSIRIS-REx, it requires team supervision and input.
After each step of this process, the spacecraft will send information and images back to Earth so that the scientists can make sure that everything is working properly.
The probe is too far away, its launch takes 18.5 minutes to reach the earth, and any signal from the control room takes the same time to reach OSIRIS-REx.
