The Seattle Mariners came within inches of making their first World Series appearance, but ultimately lost to the Toronto Blue Jays. If they want to make it to the end, they need to make sure their lineup is the best it can be.

Through a trade, a replacement could be available at second base. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report believes the Mariners should let Jorge Polanco hit free agency and upgrade at the position by trading All-Star and Silver Slugger second baseman Ketel Marte with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The transaction looks like this:
Mariners receive: 2B Ketel Marte
DBacks get: RHP Logan Evans, 2B Michael Arroyo, SS Felnin Celesten
“Why is Kotel Marte a popular name on the trade market this offseason? The 32-year-old will earn the rights to 10-5 shortly after the start of the 2026 season, which is available when a player has 10 years of service time and has spent at least five seasons with his current team. To nix any trade… Adding his impact bat at second base would give the Mariners an upgrade over Jorge Polanco, who has a solid 2025 season in his own right and Seattle has more potential talent on the trade market than any team in baseball,” Reuters wrote.

Last season, Marte slashed .283/.376/.517/.893 with 28 doubles, 28 homers and 72 RBIs in 126 games. He’s also a pinch hitter, so the Mariners won’t lose that either.
Most recently, the Seattle Mariners and DBacks have become trade partners after acquiring Josh Naylor at the trade deadline. Hopefully they will do the same and have some negotiations.
