Malnourished dog found in Springfield recovering but ‘not out of the woods’

An extremely malnourished-looking dog found in Springfield this week is “still not out of the woods” after being taken in by a shelter, but is showing some signs of recovery.

Earlier this week, a male dog wearing a black coat was found unattended and battling the elements in a yard on Sherelin Street, according to the shelter’s social media post.

The dog was taken to the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center in Springfield and placed in the emergency room.

The dog, which the shelter named Raven, was initially unable to feed herself, but the shelter released an update Wednesday saying Raven had responded to feeding efforts.

“The pup, named Crow, is not out of the woods yet, but he does have enough energy to hold his head up and eat on his own,” the statement said.

The shelter does not know when Raven will return from the emergency room. His prediction was “cautious.”

The shelter is trying to figure out how Raven was able to live alone in such extreme conditions and is imploring anyone with camera footage of the area around Cherelin Street to share it with the shelter.

As of Friday afternoon, the shelter’s Facebook post detailing the situation had received more than 3,800 likes and more than 1,000 comments.
