Lionel Messi scored an iconic moment in a 2-1 win over Australia to help Argentina reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Saturday. Messi scored his 789th goal in his 1,000th career game – but first in the knockout rounds of the World Cup – to help lift the undefeated Netherlands into the last eight on Friday. Julian Alvarez scored another goal in the 57th minute after some disastrous defense for Australia before Enzo Fernandez scored an own goal in the 77th minute to add to the unexpected tension.
After the game, a TV presenter showed Messi a video of his wife Antonella Rocuzzo and the children (Thiago, Mateo and Ciro) celebrating his first half goal. His response was priceless.

The Argentine players celebrated wildly in front of huge crowds and Man of the Match Messi also paid tribute to them for leading his team across the finish line.
“A fantastic feeling and I’m really happy to share these beautiful and happy moments with them,” said the 35-year-old, who is trying to win the World Cup for the first time in what will surely be his last attempt.
“I know how hard they work to be with us and I know how much they enjoy it.
“We have a connection – it’s a beautiful thing, that’s what a national team should be.”
