The Lakers are in the Western Conference semifinals, which is exactly where LeBron James wants the team to be heading into the season. During the offseason, James made it clear that competing for a championship remains his top priority.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic opportunity to win it all. We are very grateful for our eight-year relationship with Jeanne [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] And considers the Lakers an important part of his career. “
James probably didn’t foresee the playoffs unfolding the way they did, especially with Luka Doncic out and Austin Reeves only recently returning from injury. If the Lakers want to win this series, they’re going to need players other than James to play more of an offensive role.
“The Lakers’ predicament surrounding LeBron James is exactly that — surrounding LeBron James as a player, not James himself. As has been a recurring narrative throughout James’ career — for whatever reason — LeBron doesn’t have enough help right now, and there’s no solution in sight. Unless Reeves can magically regain his midseason form over the next few games, this could be an abbreviated series,” wrote Colin Keane of Lake Show Life.

At this point in his career, it’s no longer realistic for James to carry the entire playoff offense day in and day out. Even at 41 years old, he is still capable of scoring 30+ points, but the Lakers can’t just rely on him to surpass the Thunder.
Reeves is expected to bounce back after a poor showing in Game 1.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin wrote: “But after shooting 3-for-16 and committing a team-high four turnovers as the Los Angeles Lakers lost to the defending champions in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals, Reeves acknowledged that context means nothing at this stage of the playoffs.”
If James ends up being the team’s leading scorer throughout the series, Los Angeles could be in serious trouble. It won’t necessarily be Reeves every night, but the Lakers will need multiple players to contribute meaningfully, similar to the spark Luke Kennard provided against the Houston Rockets earlier in the playoffs.

The Lakers still have a chance to steal in Game 2, but it will require balanced scoring and consistent offensive support around James. If the burden continues to fall entirely on him, this could become a major issue for Los Angeles moving forward.
