The Jets will use the franchise tag on Brees Hall, according to Connor Hughes.
This is not surprising. Jets general manager Darren Muggie said days ago that the Jets would mark Hall if the team couldn’t reach a long-term extension with him before today’s deadline.

There are two questions. The first is whether the two parties can reach an agreement in advance. The answer is obviously no. The second question is whether the Jets will use the franchise tag or the transition tag. Transition labels are only about $3 million cheaper but offer far fewer protections. On the transition tag, Hall will be able to pursue offers from new teams. The Jets have the right to match any offer sheet Brees signs with a new team, but they won’t receive any compensation if they choose not to match. For all intents and purposes, the franchise tag keeps Hall with the Jets for one more year, barring a trade. Since the franchise tag protection is much greater, it is almost always the team’s first choice. Transition tags are rarely used. It’s not entirely clear why the Jets considered using the transition tag, but they were wise to use the more powerful tools at their disposal.
The team tag sets Hall’s 2026 salary at $14.293 million. The Jets and he could continue to try to work out a long-term deal, which could lower his cap hit this season.
