Former Indian bowler Ashoke Dinda has represented the likes of Kolkata Knights (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during his long IPL career. It now appears that the Pacers’ IPL career wouldn’t have begun had it not been for Ricky Ponting. Ponting joined KKR in the IPL’s inaugural run in 2008 and revealed that Dinda was initially a net bowler. But he bowled all batsmen for seven to 10 days in every training session, which impressed the former Australia captain and he eventually told John Buchanan to give him a contract.

In an interview with DC social media, Ponting revealed, “Ashoke Dinda was our bowler in Calcutta, and for seven to 10 days, he ran into the bowling ball for all of us every time. I ended up saying, John Buchanan said, “This guy has something, let’s give him a contract. “He ended up getting one.”

He further added: “I think he probably also took the first three wickets in the IPL, and that ended up being the start of Ashoke Dinda’s 12- or 13-year career in the IPL.”

Dinda left KKR for Daredevil in Delhi in 2011 and represented the Pune Warriors from 2012 to 2013. He played for RCB in 2014 and 2015 and Rising Pune Supergiant from 2016 to 2017.
