Apple has reportedly updated the repair process for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which could make it easier to troubleshoot issues with Face ID, the company’s biometric smartphone unlock mechanism, and selfie camera. According to a report, while the process of repairing these phones usually involves replacing the smartphone, Apple Authorized Service Centers and Apple Stores can solve these problems by repairing the same device. The changes reportedly only apply to Apple’s high-end Pro models, which launched last September.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, the iPhone maker has announced via an internal memo that Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers will be able to troubleshoot issues with the iPhone 14’s Selfie (or TrueDepth) camera and Face ID sensor to fix Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max without having to replace the smartphone yourself. This should lead to less e-waste as part of the repair process.
According to the report, Apple already supports same-device repairs for the iPhone XS and newer models, with the exception of the iPhone 14 series, which debuted last year. However, it’s currently unclear whether the changes to repair the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max phones will apply to all markets and if (or when) they will become the norm.
Meanwhile, the report states that iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus owners will have to wait a while for same-device repairs to be supported on these phones. TechnologyShout has reached out to Apple to comment on whether the improved repair process applies to iPhone 14 Pro models in the country and will update this article when the company responds.
Last year it was reported that Apple extended its Face ID repair program to the iPhone X, allowing for repairs without replacing the entire device. The company had previously initiated the program for the iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models.
