India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs and posted a record first-innings total in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday to defend the title.
India scored 255 runs for five with strong contributions from Sanju Samson (89), Abhishek Sharma (52) and Ishan Kishan (54). This total is the highest score in a T20 World Cup final. With this victory, India also became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title.
Chasing 256 runs, New Zealand lost early wickets while trying to increase their scoring rate.
Finn Allen (9) and Glenn Phillips (5) were dismissed early, putting the team under pressure.
The Indian bowlers then took control of the match. Axar Patel was 3 for 27 and Jasprit Bumrah was 4 for 15. After Tim Seifert was ejected, scoring 52 points on 26 balls, the outcome of the game was essentially decided.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Samson and Abhishek attacked the New Zealand bowlers from the start.
The duo scored 98 runs for the first wicket in 7.1 overs, laying the foundation for a high total.
India crossed the 200-run mark in the 15th over.
New Zealand’s scoring slowed down when James Neesham dismissed Samson, Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav (0) for six in the 16th over.
Hardik Pandya scored 18 before being dismissed while Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 26 and scored 24 in the final bowled by Neesham.
India has scored 52 runs in the last five overs.
