As the 2023 Asian Cup controversy heats up, cricketers, fans and pundits have reacted. While a decision on the venue for the Continental Championship was postponed at the recent Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, Indian veteran Ravichandran Ashwin also took to the social media world to voice his views on the topic . Ashwin argued in a video on his YouTube channel that it would be impossible for Pakistan to skip the ODI World Cup in India if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refuses to travel to their country for the Asian Cup.
“The Asian Cup was supposed to be held in Pakistan. However, India announced that if it is held in Pakistan then we will not be participating. If you want us to participate, change the venue. But we will see that happen a lot Time, right? When we say the Asian Cup will not go to their place, they will say they will not come to our place either,” Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
The finger-spinner played down Pakistan’s ‘ODI World Cup threat’ by suggesting there’s no way they’d miss that match.
“However, I don’t think it’s possible,” Ashwin said of Pakistan’s claim that India would miss 50 World Cup games if it didn’t travel to Pakistan for the Asian Cup.
As for the host of the event, Ashwin believes that the event should be moved to Sri Lanka rather than the UAE, as many events have been held in the Middle East recently.
“The final decision may be that the Asian Cup will be moved to Sri Lanka. This is an important preparation for more than 50 World Cups. Many games are played in Dubai. I will also be happy for Sri Lanka if it is moved to Sri Lanka,” he asserted.
The stalemate over the host country for the Asian Cup shows no sign of ending. However, the ACC has to make a decision in March because the game is scheduled for September.
