Iconic 83-year-old pizza chain has closed over 100 restaurants

Selling Chicago-style pizza outside of Chicago has been a challenge.

To someone who grew up near Boston, a city with a long tradition of thin-crust pizza from chains like Pizzeria Regina, Papa Gino’s and Santarpio’s, deep-dish pizza may seem like an entirely different food. It wasn’t common during my childhood, and I never really considered it pizza.

Despite this, Uno Pizzeria, known as Pizzeria Uno in the 1980s and 1990s, thrived in New England. The chain offers a deep-dish pizza that’s a version of Chicago’s classic pizza, but also closer to traditional pizza.

It’s deep dish, but not as deep as those traditionally sold under that name. You can eat it with a fork and knife, but you can also pick it up and slice it.

Uno hasn’t exactly taken over New England, but it has a steady presence in dozens of locations across the region. The business has slowly shrunk as the entire chain has shrunk from more than 150 stores nationwide to just 36 as of February 3, 2026, according to the store page on the company’s website.

Now, the chain has abruptly closed three more locations in Massachusetts.

Uno Pizzeria has closed its locations in Dedham, Revere and Braintree, Massachusetts, without any notice to customers, WCVB Boston reported.

The chain posted a notice on its Facebook page, which has since been deleted.

“After 34 years of serving this amazing community, our Revere location will close its doors for the final time on Sunday,” the restaurant posted. “Our sincere thanks to everyone who has made this restaurant feel like home for over three decades. It was an unforgettable experience!”

The closures leave just five Massachusetts locations listed on the chain’s website. New Hampshire lists two locations in Concord and Tilton. There are no longer any Uno restaurants in Rhode Island.

Uno did not respond to the news station’s request for comment.

  • The total number of units is significantly reduced: Uno has been shrinking in size over the past few years. The company closed more than a quarter of its U.S. restaurants in 2024, from about 68 locations to about 53 locations, and continued closures caused that number to decline in 2025, National Restaurant News (NRN) reported.
