Fox 2Snow squalls caused a large crash involving three semi-trucks and about two dozen vehicles on Interstate 75 in Detroit Monday afternoon.

Backstory

The crash scene on the northbound side of the highway after McNichols has been cleared and that side of the highway is now open. Some final towing needs to be done and some road salting needs to be done.

According to state police, the culprit may have been several small crashes rather than one large pile-up.

Cooper was a driver involved in a highway pile-up. Said the snowstorm caused the whiteout weather. He said his car hit the underside of a semi-truck and was somehow injured.

“It was a total whiteout, there was nothing to see, and like I said, everybody was going 25 or 30 until they didn’t. My car was totaled,” he said.

The exact number of vehicles involved is currently unclear. All lanes are blocked.

“Some of the semis may have difficulty, some of the racing may have difficulty, whatever it is, that could last (last) most of the day,” MDOT’s Diane Cross said in a phone interview with FOX 2. “Currently, we have northbound 75 closed at McNichols. Don’t be surprised if we move it back to Davidson so traffic can be diverted from the highway to the highway.”

Cross said semi-trucks require special tractors.

“We have EMS and Michigan State Police on hand to determine the cause.”

According to MDOT, the left shoulder, left lane, right center lane, right lane and right shoulder are blocked.

The backup stretched for miles, with initial estimates suggesting at least 20 vehicles or more.

Due to the challenging road conditions throughout the day active winter weather day First it was a gust of wind, then a blinding blizzard.

West M-10 and Woodward may be alternative routes, according to Cross.
