hp omnibook ultra flip review 1738754395126

When it launched, the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 was one of the first laptops to feature the new Intel Core Ultra 7 Series 2 processor. The new chipset is expected to offer improved efficiency compared to the Series 1, which is what many people are looking for in a slim ultrabook. However, the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 can also double as a tablet, thanks to its 360-degree hinge and touch-enabled display.

HP’s convertible is one of the few 2-in-1s on the market powered by the new Intel Core Ultra Series 2 chipset. It doesn’t come cheap though, as the base variant starts at Rs. 1,81,999. The device we received for review comes with Intel Core Ultra 7 258V chipset and retails for Rs. 1,89,999. Is this 2-in-1 worth the money? Read our review to find out.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 design

  • Dimensions – 31.37 x 21.62 x 1.49 cm
  • Weight – 1.34kg
  • Color – Atmospheric Blue

At first glance, there’s nothing overtly special about the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14. The laptop is thin, made of aluminum, and has a matte finish that resists fingerprints and smudges.

This laptop looks stylish with a matte finish

However, if you look closely, you’ll see that the rear edge is angled and houses the USB Type-C port. Yes, there is no USB Type-A port on the laptop. There’s a third USB Type-C port on the right side and a 3.5mm audio port on the right side.

There’s a large air intake and bottom-firing speakers on the bottom

It’s important to note that you can only use the Type-C port on the right side to charge the laptop. You also can’t plug anything thick into the angled USB Type-C port because the display will get in the way.

The 360-degree hinge looked very durable throughout this review. The functionality is also quite smooth.

Beveled to accommodate USB Type-C port

The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 has a metal HP logo on the top, the OmniBook moniker on the outside of the right hinge, and Polystudio engraving on the left. On the bottom you’ll find a large air intake grille and some rubber feet. The notebook weighs 1.34 kg and is only 14.9 mm thick.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 display

  • Size – 14 inches, 2.8K resolution, OLED touch, 16:10
  • Refresh rate – 48-120Hz
  • Brightness – 500 nits

Ultra Flip 14, as the name suggests, has a 14-inch 2.8K resolution OLED panel, supports multi-touch, and offers a 120Hz refresh rate. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and supports HDR. HP also claims that the panel offers a 0.2 millisecond response time and up to 500 nits of brightness in HDR mode.

The display has a reflective coating, making it difficult to read outdoors

OLED panels are great for watching movies, especially HDR content. You get deep blacks and vivid color reproduction. Although I wouldn’t recommend using the laptop outdoors due to the glossy panel, the display gets quite bright indoors as well.

It’s a great-looking monitor, with deep blacks and vibrant colors

The touch response on the panel is very good and you can easily use it as a tablet. However, I prefer using it in tent mode, as using it as a tablet quickly becomes uncomfortable due to the weight. The panel also supports stylus input, and HP’s rechargeable MPP 2.0 tilt pen comes included in the box.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 keyboard, touchpad, speakers, and webcam

  • Keyboard – Full size, backlit, fingerprint reader
  • Touchpad – multi-touch with tactile feedback
  • Speakers – Quad Drivers Powered by Poly Studio
  • Webcam – 9 megapixel, IR, dual microphone

The keyboard on the laptop is great for typing. The function row is a lighter shade of gray compared to the rest of the keyboard, and the power button is a light blue color and houses an embedded fingerprint scanner. The keys are well spaced, the backlighting is adequate, and the travel is decent. However, I would prefer the D-pad to be larger.

The laptop features a large trackpad and fingerprint scanner

HP has equipped the Ultra Flip 14 with a large touchpad that works well and supports multi-touch gestures. Tactile feedback is also pretty good, but can be a bit strong.

The speakers aren’t all that powerful overall, but they’re adequate for indoor use. You get four bottom-firing speakers, which deliver clear audio and are loud, but lack low-end frequencies. They are powered by Poly Studio.

The laptop has a 9-megapixel infrared webcam with a physical shutter. The quality is good, with plenty of detail and mostly accurate colors in good lighting conditions. It’s better than many other laptop webcams. However, low-light performance leaves something to be desired.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 Software

  • Operating System – Windows 11 Home Edition
  • Add-on Software – Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021

Since this is a Copilot+ PC, you do get some artificial intelligence capabilities, but Microsoft’s signature recall feature is nowhere to be found. The laptop runs Windows 11 Home and comes with a host of HP software built-in, such as Poly Camera Pro, AI Companion, HP Smart, McAfee LiveSafe, and HP Omen.

HP AI Companion is for those who work with large amounts of PDFs

While most of the apps I mentioned above aren’t all that useful, if you do this often, you can use the AI Companion app to search PDFs. This laptop is equipped with a powerful Intel NPU, but it doesn’t have enough artificial intelligence capabilities for its needs.

You can use the Copilot chatbot, and there are many useful AI tools available in Paint. The Poly Camera Pro app can also come in handy during video calls or streaming, as it offers automatic framing, backgrounds, watermarks, spotlights, and a bunch of camera filters. There are also Windows Studio effects to enhance your video calling experience.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 performance

  • GPU – Intel Arc 140V

Our review unit came with an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V chipset paired with 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and an Intel Arc 140V integrated GPU. This laptop performs quite well in day-to-day use, which includes using Chrome, opening a lot of tabs, streaming videos on YouTube or Netflix, running apps like Slack, and doing a lot of typing.

Intel Core Ultra Series 2 chips are extremely efficient

I ran a series of benchmarks on my laptop to see how it performed relative to the Series 1 Intel Core Ultra chip, and you can see improvements, especially in GPU performance.

benchmark HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 Dell Latitude 7450 2-in-1 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360
Geekbench 6 Single 2,744 2,339 2,380

Cinebench R23 more 6,608 9,024 10,961
Geekbench Artificial Intelligence (NPU) 28676 (quantification) not applicable not applicable

The integrated GPU is also powerful enough to run games like Forza Horizon 4, which runs at around 40-50fps on the laptop. I never encountered any major issues or lag while using the laptop, and the cooling system did a good job of controlling heat during heavy tasks like gaming and video editing.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 battery

  • Capacity – 64Wh lithium-ion battery
  • Charging – 65W

The battery life of the OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 is impressive, to say the least. My laptop lasted 9-10 hours (a full workday) with about 30% battery left. The new Intel Core Ultra Series 2 chipsets are definitely more efficient than before without sacrificing too much in performance.

HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 Verdict

It’s time to draw a conclusion. I want to say that the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 is definitely on the expensive side, which is why I can’t recommend it to users. However, if price isn’t an issue and it’s going to drop soon, this HP 2-in-1 laptop is a solid choice.

The OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 has a great OLED display, good performance (especially for gaming), great battery life, and is portable. While it does lack some basic features like a USB Type-A port, it’s not bad. If you’re a creator looking for a 2-in-1 with a great screen and good battery life, this is a great option.
