How to Use WhatsApp Message Summaries on iOS and Android: A Step-by-Step Guide

WhatsApp message snippets were recently launched on the messaging platform as a way to quickly follow up on long conversations in chats. The feature relies on Meta AI and generates a summary of messages received since the last time you opened a chat. WhatsApp says that while messages are protected with end-to-end encryption (E2EE), it sends them to secure servers for processing. The feature is only available in select regions, and WhatsApp says it currently supports English.

According to the company, WhatsApp message summaries are disabled by default. Users must choose to access these features, which rely on Meta’s new private processing technology. WhatsApp Message Digest relies on artificial intelligence and requires an internet connection to get compressed versions of unread messages in chats.

How WhatsApp message summaries work

WhatsApp claims that it provides E2EE protection for all messages and media sent and received on the platform. However, in order to process chat message summaries, WhatsApp sends them to a confidential cloud environment called Private Processing. The company said earlier this year that the technology is designed to handle artificial intelligence tasks securely without providing access to anyone, including Meta or WhatsApp.

Therefore, your phone needs to be connected to the Internet to access the WhatsApp message digest feature. These summaries will appear briefly in the chat after a certain number of unread messages have been received. WhatsApp also said that private handling features, including message summaries, are turned off by default and you must choose to use them.

Meta notes that some of the summaries of WhatsApp messages generated using artificial intelligence may be inappropriate or inaccurate. This is the same information that the company displays when using Meta AI assistant in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. If you don’t see the Private Deals option in your WhatsApp settings, you’ll need to wait until these features are rolled out to your region before you can access the WhatsApp message digest feature.
