Google’s search results AI overview is designed to use artificial intelligence (AI) to quickly provide a summary of results. While these can provide a convenient bird’s-eye view of search results, they can also provide factually incorrect information based on data from sketchy sources. Users who want to switch back to a simpler version of the Google search engine that excludes search results can take two steps to clean up the results page so that it only displays links that match their search query.
You might want to remove Google’s AI overview from search results to speed up searches, or you might just not want to see the AI-generated box at the top of the page for aesthetic reasons. If you want to hide the AI overview, you can modify the search bar settings in your browser to hide these results — or use a more irreverent method to do it.
How to hide Google AI from search results by default Overview
This method allows you to hide the AI overview from all search results and does not require any additional browser extensions. We tested this process on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge for Windows and Android, but it should work on any browser that allows you to use a custom search engine. In the examples below, we use Chrome for Windows.
-
Launch Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select set up.
-
Click search engine > Manage search engine and site searches.
-
Find the site search section and click Add to button.
-
In the window that pops up, give your custom search engine a name and paste the following text into the URL field:
https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 -
Click savethen click the three-dot menu and select Set as default.
-
Enter your search terms in the address bar and press Enter to see the free AI Overview search results.

If you’re on someone else’s device and don’t want to make any changes to your search engine settings, or if you just want to see search results quickly without fiddling with any browser settings, you can (as the folks at Lifehacker discovered) just swear by Google.
- Open Google Chrome on your smartphone or desktop computer.
- Enter your search query.
- Add an expletive at the beginning of your search query.
- Press Enter to see the search results without any AI overview.
