Grizzlies C Zach Edey out for rest of season after ankle surgery

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Eddy will miss the remainder of the season.

The Grizzlies announced Sunday that Eddie will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 season after undergoing successful surgery to “address ongoing discomfort and bone pressure in his left ankle.” He is reportedly expected to be fully fit for the 2026-27 season.

The Grizzlies have just 22 games remaining on their schedule and don’t have much time to recover after Tuesday’s 117-110 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Eddie has not played for the Grizzlies since their victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on December 7. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left ankle and has been sidelined ever since. Eddie underwent ankle surgery last June and missed the start of the season.

The team said Sunday that despite Eady’s continued discomfort, the lateral ligaments in his ankle remain stable and that the surgery will “strengthen the medial ligament complex and accelerate bone healing.”

Eddie averaged 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game this season, which ranked second in the league. The former Purdue star was selected with the No. 9 overall pick in 2024. However, Eddie has only played in 11 games this season and has also missed time with a head injury.

At 7-foot-3 and 305 pounds, injuries continue to be a significant issue for the 23-year-old Eddie.

Of course, Memphis has plenty of reasons not to worry about losing their starting center at this point. The team currently sits at 23-37 and is five games out of the Western Conference’s final play-in spot, which will likely make it one of the teams to focus more on its position in the tight 2026 NBA Draft.

The team was ranked eighth in the lottery as of Tuesday night, and the entire top 10 in the draft could offer impact talent based on the performance of this year’s college basketball freshman class.
