Google Meet has begun rolling out a new feature that allows desktop users to change their background during video calls. The platform introduces a set of default images that video callers can use to change the background. It includes office space, landscape and abstract background. Google also provides the option to upload your own image as a background. Competitor Zoom has previously introduced this feature, and even Skype introduced it earlier this year. It is being rolled out to desktop users in phases.
Google announced new features in its blog. Microsoft said that the custom background feature will run on Chrome OS and Chrome browsers on Windows and Mac desktop devices. Users do not need extensions or any other software to run. Google Meet mobile app users are expected to get this feature soon. Google says that it can take up to 7 days for eligible devices to see this feature.
The custom background feature is being launched for Google Meet Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise for Education, and non-profit customers and users with personal Google accounts. In addition, participants in meetings organized by educational clients cannot use the function of uploading pictures as a background.
The background change function is turned off by default and needs to be enabled by the user. Google also said that changing the background may slow down the device.
