Good Luck Jerry — starring Janhvi Kapoor and out Friday on Disney+ Hotstar — marks filmmaker Siddharth Sen’s foray into film after a career in ad production. For his feature debut, Sen chose to remake the 2018 Tamil film Kolamaavu Kokila, which tells the story of an innocent girl drawn into the criminal world of drug smuggling. Thematically, both films are black comedies, so the main differences here are the setting and technical aspects – and of course the casting.
The Hindi remake of Good Luck Jerry takes place in Punjab, a state notorious for its illegal drug trade. In his first collaboration with Disney+ Hotstar, Janhvi Kapoor reprises Nayanthara’s (from the original book) titular protagonist, Jerry, as she struggles to find work to care for her parents. Circumstances pushed her over the edge, and she was forced to trade “devil’s dandruff,” aka cocaine, to make ends meet—eventually her family joined the business.

In an interview, Sen talked about his directing process — and, more specifically, his acting advice to Kapoor: “If you really want Jerry, you have to live in this world, and live here. “Being with people like them, acting like them, talking like them. The next moment I saw her sitting on the sidewalk reading a script. I thought she was just trying to make me happy because I told her, but from that day on, she Lived there. She slept on set, played cards, learned magic tricks, rode a rickshaw, played cricket, pretty much everything.”
This complements Kapoor’s dialect training, where she switches between Bihari and a mild Punjabi accent, depending on the situation. It was revealed that Jerry was an immigrant from Bihar trying to adjust to a new culture while struggling with problems at home. Good Luck Jerry also marks producer Aanand L Rai’s second collaboration with Disney+ Hotstar, following Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan’s romantic fantasy drama Atrangi Re.

Following his Filmfare nomination for Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Kapoor made another OTT appearance with Good Luck Jerry. Jaipreet “Jerry” Sethi was seen as a lively, well-mannered girl whose personality took a turn for the worse when her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. Taking advantage of her looks, she transforms into a fearless drug dealer, stuffing contraband into her mother and getting involved in the gang.
“At a critical moment, [Jerry] A lot more than her character would suggest,” Kapoor said in an interview detailing the family dynamic.
Deepak Dobriyal is number two on the list, playing Shekhar, Jerry’s close companion and admirer. He serves as the film’s comedic stand-in–he keeps accosting her, and later helps with the drug deal to arrange for her treatment. His character seems to be lurking around town, keeping an eye on everyone and making connections to help Jerry achieve her goals.

Mita Vashisht — yet to be identified — plays Jerry’s mother in Good Luck Jerry, struggling to make ends meet after her husband’s death. After being diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer, the emotional woman was forced to sit on the sidelines, leaving her daughter to do the heavy lifting as she contemplated death.
Sushant Singh plays the villain, a gangster looking to expand his drug empire, who meets Jerry while placing a high priority order.
He was joined by Sahil Mehta, who oversaw the distribution and recruitment of new sellers. In the Good Luck Jerry trailer, he can be seen refusing to enroll Jerry – claiming that drug dealing is not a woman’s job.
Neeraj Sood has an undisclosed role in Good Luck Jerry.

The official trailer for Good Luck Jerry, which went live on July 14, highlights the plot beats and the type of music we can expect. The trailer reveals that Jerry was working as a chiropractor long before her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. There’s some quick footage of her haphazardly carrying drugs and walking past unsuspecting police officers – and it ends with her family getting involved.
As part of the promotion, Disney+ Hotstar also released some behind-the-scenes footage and some wacky info skits that have nothing to do with the actual movie.
