WASHINGTON — Georgetown men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley was suspended from the school for one game Sunday after throwing a water bottle into the stands at the end of the previous night’s loss to Xavier.
“I met with Coach Cooley today to discuss the events that occurred following last night’s game against Xavier. I stated that his actions were inconsistent with the standards we expect of a coach and do not reflect the values of Georgetown Athletics or Georgetown University,” Georgetown athletic director Lee Reed said in a written statement. “As a result, Coach Cooley will be suspended for the next game against Coppin State. Associate head coach Jeff Battle will coach the team.”

The Hoyas lost 80-77 to visiting Xavier on Saturday, falling to 8-4 and 1-1 in Big East play. When the final buzzer sounded, Cooley grabbed a water bottle, turned around and threw it toward the crowd. The bottle travels in a straight line and appears to hit someone.
“I am deeply sorry for my actions during last night’s game and sincerely apologize to … the family I have known for many years and consider them family. My actions were unacceptable and do not represent who I am or the leader I strive to be,” Cooley said Sunday. “I also want to apologize to the Georgetown community, the team, the fans, the league and my family. I take full responsibility for my actions and their consequences. I will learn from this experience and ensure this never happens again.”
When Georgetown hosts Coppin State on Monday night, Battle will take charge at McDonough Stadium on campus.
The Big East released a statement shortly after Georgetown announced it was punishing Cooley.

“We have communicated with Georgetown leadership and support their decision to suspend men’s basketball head coach Ed Cooley for his conduct following last night’s game against Xavier,” the meeting said. “The safety of spectators and participants at Big East events is critical and paramount to the enjoyment of our games.”
Cooley, a 12-year coach at conference rival Providence, is in his third season with the Hoyas.
Since Cooley arrived, Georgetown’s record is 35-43.
