LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kevin Johnson died of “blunt force trauma and stab wounds to the head” at a homeless encampment, the medical examiner said.

Johnson, 55, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning after being found unresponsive, the Los Angeles County medical examiner said. His death has been ruled a homicide and is under investigation.

Johnson was drafted by New England in the fourth round of the 1993 draft and played for the Patriots, Minnesota and Oakland before joining the Eagles. In two years with Philadelphia, he had 43 tackles, including seven sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown. In 1997, he played 15 games for the Raiders.

Johnson later played for the Arena Football League in Orlando and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles native played ball at Texas Southern University.

Investigators believe Johnson had been living at the camp at the time of his death. Friends said health problems in Johnson’s later years contributed to his situation.
