Fatal shooting under investigation in Florida

The St. Lucie County Sheriff said deputies are investigating a fatal shooting west of U.S. Highway 1 on March 9.

Sheriff’s officials received a call about a shooting in the 800 block of North Lake Avenue around 11 a.m., Sheriff Richard Del Toro said.

Two men in their early 20s were on the grass of a house. One of the people died and the other was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, del Toro said.

Del Toro said the two got into an argument at another house. One man pulled out a handgun and fired, striking the other man in the chest/shoulder area.

Del Toro said the victim ran back to his home and was chased by the gunman.

“A wrestling match ensued, the gun changed hands, and the suspect was shot,” Del Toro said.

He said the incident may have been a self-defense type case, but the case was in the early stages of investigation.

Del Toro said some neighbors heard the gunshots and ran outside.
