‘Excellent’ manager on Liverpool shortlist suddenly becomes available

Liverpool are going through a difficult second season under Arne Slott.

The Dutchman joins from Feyenoord at the end of the 2023/24 season, replacing Jurgen Klopp. Slott’s career at Anfield couldn’t have gotten off to a better start – winning the Premier League title in his first season in charge.

Sporting director Richard Hughes subsequently backed the tactician with new signings worth £450m in the summer transfer window.

Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak signed recording contracts with British labels, while Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and others also received significant funding.

But the season didn’t go as expected.

Only a handful of top-flight games have been won since September, leading to speculation that Richard Hughes and his FSG sponsors may make changes in the dugout.

The 47-year-old Sloter’s contract only runs until 2027, which means the club does not have to pay a large compensation package.

While the Reds remain in contention for a Champions League spot, they are unlikely to sack Slott, but his position is expected to be reviewed in the off-season.

De Zerbi leaves Marseille

Roberto De Zerbi, 46, won praise at Brighton before moving to Ligue 1 side Marseille.

The Italian guided l’OM to second place in France’s top flight behind Paris Saint-Germain last season, but his tenure came to an end on Tuesday after 19 months in charge.

Much of the tactician’s fine work has been unraveled in the past few weeks – with a shock Champions League exit at the hands of Club Brugge and a 5-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Classic at the weekend.

Marseille issued a statement confirming that a mutual decision had been taken – De Zerbi is very popular in the market now.

Can Liverpool return to the RDZ?

Additionally, Melissa Reddy revealed in a report that Liverpool’s top brass consider De Zerbi to be an “excellent” manager. The trusted Liverpool journalist also posted on X that Richard Hughes is a fan of the former Milan midfielder.

Pearce said concerns over his style of play and compatibility with Liverpool scuppered his chances of appointment. But his work stands up to scrutiny – even if his performance in Marseille disappoints.

It’s clear that Liverpool were once keen on De Zerbi and now – like fellow contenders Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim – he’s surprisingly back on the market.
