Former Chelsea defender Felipe Luis has been sacked as Flamengo coach, just hours after Flamengo won 8-0 to reach this weekend’s Carioca League final.
Luis, 40, has won an average of one trophy every 14 games in his 100 games in charge of Flamengo since replacing former Brazil coach Tite in September 2024, leading Flamengo to seven titles.

Flamengo have lost consecutive finals in 2026 and were runners-up in the Brazilian Super Cup and Copa Sudamericana last month.
But after an 8-0 win over Madureira in the second leg on Monday night, they will have the chance to win a third successive Rio title against Fluminense in Sunday’s final.
However, after the club issued a brief statement announcing his dismissal at 00:59 local time, Luis will no longer be in charge of the team.
“Felipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (strength coach) will also leave the club with him,” the club said.

“Flamengo would like to thank former player and coach Felipe Luis for everything he achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and good luck as he continues his career.”
Luiz won the Premier League title with Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2015, and his achievements include leading Flamengo to the Copa Libertadores in 2025.
Luis thus became the ninth player to win the tournament as a player and coach, having won the trophy twice with Flamengo in 2019 and 2022.
He also won Serie A, Brazilian Cup, Brazilian Super Cup, Carioca League, FIFA Challenger Cup and FIFA Americas honors during his tenure, having previously led Flamengo’s U-17 and U-20 sides to league titles.

Flamengo also reached the last 16 of last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, losing 2-4 to Bayern Munich after beating eventual champions Chelsea to top the group.
