Elon Musk revealed on Sunday that Tesla has begun the tapeout process for the company’s new AI5 chipset. It is the successor to the AI4 chip used in the latest Tesla cars. Additionally, Musk confirmed that the electric vehicle (EV) maker has also begun work on its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) chipset, AI6. The multinational entrepreneur also emphasized that the Texas-based company is currently planning to expand its chip deployment to compete with all artificial intelligence chip manufacturers in the world.
Tesla will increase development of artificial intelligence chipsets
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tesla’s CEO emphasized that the company is about to launch the AI5 chipset, which will replace the AI4 chips that power the current generation of Tesla vehicles. Tape-out is one of the final steps in chipset design, with the final chip design being sent to the foundry for fabrication and then fabrication. On the other hand, Tesla has also started the design process of the next generation AI6 chip.
When talking about Tesla’s current chip development, Musk emphasized that many people still don’t know that the company has had an artificial intelligence chip department and a dedicated engineering team for many years, and has designed and deployed millions of artificial intelligence chips for its electric vehicles and data centers. The company’s Fully Self-Driving (FSD) system is also powered by these processors.
Musk also shared details about the company’s future vision, adding: “Our goal is to bring a new AI chip design into mass production every 12 months. We expect to eventually produce more chips than all other AI chips combined.” The Tesla CEO emphasized that these chipsets are also used in the company’s Optimus humanoid robot and play a vital role in providing advanced healthcare to people.
According to Bloomberg, Samsung has reached a $16.5 billion agreement with Tesla, giving them the rights to produce AI chipsets. Musk reportedly said at the time that the new Samsung foundry in Texas would be fully dedicated to manufacturing AI6 processors.
Tesla is also hiring engineers with experience in chip design. Musk emphasized in the post that individuals interested in working for the company can apply for open positions. “We are particularly interested in applying cutting-edge artificial intelligence to chip design,” he added.
