D23 Expo, Disney’s annual event to showcase all of its future projects, kicked off on Saturday. The rally, held at the Anaheim Convention Center, was broadcast live through multiple online platforms, with announcements from Disney, Pixar and Marvel. D23 is scheduled to run for three days until September 11, during which time fans in-person can experience iconic sets from a variety of Disney media. Meanwhile, those at home have more trailers popping up. Key attractions include The Little Mermaid, Amy Adams’ “Disillusionment,” and a special announcement for the sequel to Barry Jenkins’ “The Lion King.”

The Little Mermaid trailer

At the D23 Expo, Disney finally showed for the first time Halle Bailey’s Ariel, the Little Mermaid, swimming in the coral reefs of her undersea kingdom in the Atlantic Ocean. Rob Marshall of Poppins fame is directing the live-action remake from a script written by David Magee (Life of Pi). The brief trailer only touches on the -building aspect, as Ariel sings the iconic “Part of Your World” in hopes of escaping to the land above. You can also see Flounder, who will be voiced by Jacob Tremblay (Luca).

Nearly 15 years after the release of the original film, Gisele Phillips (Adams), Disney’s live-action princess returns with a sequel. Leaving behind her “happily ever after” past, she moves to the suburbs, only to be overwhelmed by real- problems in stark contrast to her fairytale life. As temptation takes over, she hopes for a whimsical lifestyle, slowly reducing family members to pawns at her beck and call. The spell backfires, sending Gisele in a race against time to turn things around and free from her delusions.

Out 2

Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) appeared at D3 Expo to announce the sequel to Academy Award-winning Out. The Pixar film follows Riley as a teenager, dealing with the whirlwind of complex emotions that adolescence brings. It’s understandable that the movie will include new anthropomorphic emotions that wreak havoc in her head, in addition to the existing five — happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger.

Mufasa: The Lion King

The prequel to The Lion King’s 2019 “live-action” adaptation will hit theaters sometime in 2024. Directed by Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”), the film, officially titled “Mufasa: The Lion King,” follows a lion cub’s rise to become ruler of the Pride Lands. Disney didn’t share any more details, except that Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen (Superbad) will reprise their roles as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively.

Hocus Pocus 2 Trailer

The Sanderson sisters – a trio of witches – are returning to Salem to hunt down the group of teenage who inadvertently woke them from their long slumber. Hocus Pocus 2 reunites the cast of the original 1993 film – Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City”) and Kathy Najimy, who now explore the modernity of town, scour convenience stores and fly around on hoverboards , and make a grand display for Halloween.

Untitled Marvel game from Skydance New Media

Set in War II-era Paris, the untitled Marvel game pits Captain America and Black Panther against each other. Amy Hennig is known for writing and directing Uncharted games, leading development through her Skydance new media studio. Aside from some classified Hydra documents and the involvement of the four protagonists, not much is revealed in the trailer – an undisclosed member of Wakanda who looks like a standard Heavy Boots soldier.

Marvel Midnight Sun Release Date

After multiple delays, Marvel’s Midnight Sun, the upcoming tactical role-playing game, finally has a solid release date. From the creators of XCOM, the game is set in the darker, supernatural realms of the Marvel Universe and challenges players to form a faction and put an end to Lilith, the Mother of Demons.

At D23 Expo, the studio showed more gameplay footage, highlighting the turn-based combat system and choice-based dialogue options. Marvel’s Midnight Sun hosts iconic characters from the Avengers, X-Men, Outrunners and many more.

From acclaimed genre filmmaker David Lowry (“The Green Knight”), “Peter Pan and Wendy” is a live-action remake of the original 1953 animated film.
