The Indian government launched DIGIPIN in May this year to simplify location mapping, enhance logistics and emergency response. The new digital platform, launched under the National Geospatial Policy 2022, is said to ensure last-mile delivery, especially in rural areas. According to the government, the launch of DIGIPIN marks an important step in modernizing India’s addressing system and geospatial governance.
From information about DIGIPIN to a step-by-step guide to the process of finding your DIGIPIN, here’s everything you need to know.
What is DIGIPIN
DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It is an open source, interoperable, geocoded, grid-based digital address system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. Simply put, it is a location-based numerical code that identifies a very specific point on a map. Each DIGIPIN does not represent an entire neighborhood or region, but rather corresponds to a small geographic grid, roughly the size of a room, derived from latitude and longitude coordinates.
Unlike traditional addresses, DIGIPIN is not descriptive but is designed to be used with digital maps and positioning systems.
The Department of Postal Services aims to provide Address as a Service (AaaS) through DIGIPIN to enable secure and efficient interactions between users, government entities and private sector organizations. The digital platform has been reviewed and approved by the 2022 National Geospatial Policy Address Task Force. As per the government regulations, all ministries, departments, state governments, agencies can use the platform to integrate it into their workflows and can also be used by users for their own use.
Advantages of DIGIPIN
1. Higher accuracy than PIN code – Unlike traditional PIN code systems that cover larger postal areas, DIGIPIN provides location-level accuracy. Its granular approach is said to reduce navigation and delivery errors, especially in densely populated, poorly addressed or rural areas.
2. Precise location identification – Because DIGIPIN uses latitude and longitude coordinates to link to specific locations, it is able to identify individual properties rather than broadly defined areas, eliminating the ambiguity of traditional address formats.
3. Interoperability – DIGIPIN is an open source digital platform designed to work across platforms and systems. It can be integrated with GIS tools, e-commerce platforms, logistics networks and emergency services without any ecosystem lock-in issues.
DIGIPIN and PIN code
While DIGIPIN may feel like a modern alternative to India’s traditional PIN system, they serve a very different purpose.
The traditional six-digit PIN code identifies the postal area served by a specific post office. Therefore, one PIN can cover hundreds of households. While it’s useful for sorting messages, precise navigation is difficult.
DIGIPIN, on the other hand, identifies precise locations, including two buildings on the same street. It is designed to complement the PIN system, not replace it. PINs are numeric and zone-based, while DIGIPINs are alphanumeric and grid-based.
How to find your DIGIPIN
Citizens can generate DIGIPIN through the official portal provided by India Post. This code can be saved for future use during delivery, registration or navigation. Because it is related to a fixed geographic point, it will remain the same unless the location selected changes when searching for DIGIPIN.
Step one: Visit the “Know Your DIGIPIN” page on the official India Post website using a web browser on your mobile or computer
Step 2: Allow location access when prompted, or manually search for an address or move the map to the desired location
Step 3: Zoom in and place the pin exactly on a specific property, such as your home or office
Step 4: The platform will automatically generate a 10-character alphanumeric DIGIPIN for the selected location. Copy, share or save DIGIPIN for future use.
