Cyclones split with Wichita State and St. Thomas

Iowa State (1-2) Tennis played its first home match of the 2026 season over the weekend at the Iowa State Tennis Facility located south of the Ames Fitness Center.

The Cyclones lost to the Shockers 4-2 on Saturday and defeated the Tommies 6-1 on Sunday.

Coming off Saturday’s loss to Wichita State, Iowa State picked up two singles wins as North Texas transfer Stanislava Shurzhenko defeated Kristina Kudryavtseva 6-2, 7-5 in the fourth spot and Alicia Dell defeated Anne Knutel 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth spot.

The Cyclones defeated the Tommies on doubles points on Sunday, with No. 34 Maripas Alberto Villar/Stanislava Shulzhenko defeating Emilia Kosese/Carolina Lindahl 6-3, and Gabriella Kellner/Valentina Vargas defeating Anna Sidorenko/Else Vander Stichler 6-2.

St. Thomas’ Kosese defeated Iowa State’s Julia Kamble to take second in singles, but the rest of the day was all about the Cyclones.

Dell in the third position helped Iowa State gain a 2-1 advantage with a score of 6-0, 6-3, and Valeska San Martin Ramirez in the fifth position defeated Vander Stichele with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Alberto Vilar, ranked No. 45 in the final fall ITA rankings, defeated Lindahl 6-3, 6-0. Suzanie Pretorius helped the Cyclones to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anna Sidorenko in fifth place.

Vargas defeated Ingrid Forsberg 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 to finish sixth in singles.

Iowa State heads west to face the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at noon on Friday.
