cyberpunk phantom liberty biggest budget 1674557057424

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion has the biggest CD Projekt Red add-on content budget to date. In an interview with Polish financial news outlet Parkiet, the developer’s investor relations manager Marek Bugdoł said that budget-wise, this is the biggest expansion in the studio’s history. The executive also said the company is “comfortable” with the current duty cycle for Phantom Liberty. Development of Cyberpunk 2077 was rushed to meet its 2021 release date, resulting in numerous technical issues at launch.

While not explicitly mentioned, it’s possible that some of the increased budget was used to land Idris Elba (Suicide Squad, Molly’s Game) in a major role in the Phantom Freedom expansion. In it, he plays Solomon Reed, an FIA agent in the “New United States of America,” to which the player character V swears allegiance. Plot details are scarce, but a September trailer revealed that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the charismatic Johnny Silverhand, who thinks V’s new vows are a “bad idea.” In Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming expansion, expect tons of dead government officials, new characters, and electric whips as you take on the “mission impossible” of espionage and survival.

On Cyberpunk 2077’s official subreddit, there was a misunderstanding among members who believed that Phantom Freedom was the “biggest expansion” in CD Projekt Red’s history – before Parkiet’s report was updated. However, community director Marcin Morton came forward and clarified that this is just the max budget. “Just wanted to point out that this part is the largest budget we’ve ever released for an expansion pack. We’ll be talking more about details related to the scope of the game in the future,” reads his review. Currently, CD Projekt Red’s largest paid expansion in terms of scope is Blood and Wine for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which adds roughly 40 hours of gameplay to the base game.

As mentioned earlier, “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Freedom” will be a paid expansion pack. While pricing has yet to be confirmed, CDPR found it necessary to clarify details, as the studio is known for dropping multiple add-ons for its games. Free ones are called “DLC,” while larger, long-term development content is called “expansion.”

After the Netflix anime “Cyberpunk: Edge Runner” premiered, there has long a surge in interest in “Cyberpunk 2077” – at one point attracting 1 million console and PC gamers a day. Of course, part of this revival has to do with the developers addressing a number of technical issues that kept players from a good experience on the streets of Night City. The Witcher 3 saw a similar spike in player numbers after the Henry Cavill-led live-action series hit Netflix.

The Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Freedom expansion pack will release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X sometime this year.
