OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Kendall Coyne Schofield’s hat trick lifted the Minnesota Frost to a 5-1 victory over the Ottawa Charge on Tuesday night.

This is the first meeting between the two teams since Minnesota defeated Ottawa in four games in May to win its second straight Walter Cup title.

Home fans at TD Place Arena turned the stands pink in support of Ottawa head coach Carla MacLeod, who announced Saturday that she has breast cancer. Despite McLeod’s absence, she still received a standing ovation from Ottawa fans.

Dominic Petrie and Grace Zumwinkel also scored for Minnesota, which has now won two straight since its season-opening loss to Toronto. Nicole Hensley made 35 saves.

Rookie Rory Guilday scored Ottawa’s only goal, while Gwyneth Philips stopped 28 of 32 shots.

Kelly Pannek forced the puck in a puck battle and passed it to captain Coyne Schofield, who scored just 24 seconds into the game. Just over three minutes later, Petrie grabbed a rebound after receiving a shot from Denisa Krizova.

In the 7th minute of the game, Zumwinkel made it 3-0 with a buzzer beater.

After a scoreless second period, Coyne Schofield rounded blueliner Stephanie Makovsky and lifted his second goal of the night off Philips’ shoulders at 4:14 of the third period. Gilday sealed the win for the Charge with her first goal of PWHL play with 5:59 left, but Coyne Schofield sealed the win with an empty-netter with 1:29 left.

Coyne Schofield leads the PWHL with four goals with his first career hat trick.
