Carrick gives update on fitness of Man Utd duo

Michael Carrick has given an update on Mason Mount’s fitness, saying he is back on the grass and training.

Mount has not played since January 17 and has barely featured under new manager Michael Carrick.

Speaking about his fitness, Carrick said: “Mason is getting closer, he’s on the grass and he’s looking to train and work around it. We’ve got to be patient.”

Another player he has had to lose is Matthijs de Ligt, who has been out since November with a back problem.

Carrick said: “Matis has a back problem which is a bit painful for his progress.

“He’s heading in the right direction. It’s the nature of injuries, the back issues, it’s hard to put a time frame on it. He’s definitely improving.”

Information on De Ligt’s situation has been vague since November and it looks like it will remain so.

Benjamin Sesko is yet to start a game under Carrick but has scored three goals in his last four substitute appearances.

He was asked to start and Carrick said: “The whole thing is definitely a positive. I certainly don’t look at the decision in a negative way. We played well as a team and we didn’t get carried away and think it was going to continue.”

“The forwards scored a lot of goals and Ben was outstanding in a lot of areas. It wasn’t really a drama. It just showed what Ben is capable of. If he starts the next game or the next game, that’s it, but he did a lot of good things.

“I thought Brian played well at the back a lot of the time. We play in a different way. Four points from two games away is not bad and being able to change that from the bench is a real advantage.”
