Capcom is reportedly working on a sequel to Dead Rising that will bring back Frank West, the protagonist of the first game. The project is said to be a new mainline entry in the zombie action series, rather than a remake or remaster of an older game. Last year, Capcom unveiled Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered Edition, an enhanced version of the 2006 game updated for current-gen consoles and PC.
According to a report published by MP1st on Friday, the new Dead Rising project has been in development since 2023 and is codenamed “Rec.” The report quoted sources as saying that the new “Dead Rising” game will feature photographer Frank West. West starred in Dead Rising and Dead Rising 2: Unrevealed, and reappeared in the DLC for Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3.
Dead Rising sequel details
The game is said to be a direct sequel to Dead Rising, but that information has yet to be confirmed. However, the report did share details about the new project’s setup. The next Dead Rising game will reportedly take place in Hollywood, Los Angeles, with a “closed movie studio” serving as the game’s main location.
According to reports, the game’s main villain will be an “extravagant and crazy movie director” who puts Frank and other survivors of the zombie outbreak through various tests in order to shoot his “perfect movie.” Psychopaths will also reportedly return in the new Dead Rising game – people who go crazy after a zombie outbreak.
According to reports, a number of psychopaths will become the director’s minions, including his right-hand man tasked with filming the action while strapped with bombs. Frank will also be helped by other survivors, including actors and returning characters from the previous games.
The report also reveals some game features and mechanics. Frank West will reportedly be carrying the camera, as expected. The time limit mechanic will also return, the report states.
Capcom has yet to confirm a new Dead Rising game, but VGC cited its own sources as partially confirming MP1st’s report. There is currently no confirmed release date for the next Dead Rising game.
Last year, Capcom launched Dead Rising Deluxe Remastered Edition, an enhanced version of the original game, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The remaster brings improved graphics and control schemes, 3D audio support, and many other quality-of-life changes to improve playability.
Alongside the announcement of the Dead Rising deluxe remaster, Capcom also confirmed that it will be focusing on reactivating dormant IPs that have not seen new releases in the near future. “The company is working to further enhance corporate value by continuing to leverage its rich content library, such as reviving past IP as luxury remasters to produce efficient, high-quality games,” the publisher said at the time. Capcom is also working on sequels to its two legacy IP titles, Onimusha and Okami.
