Microsoft announced in May that Call of Duty: Back Ops 6, the next installment in Activision’s popular first-person shooter series, will be available on Xbox Game Pass when it launches in October. But the first Call of Duty game on the gaming subscription service may arrive sooner. According to reports, the Xbox parent company plans to bring Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to Xbox Game Pass this month.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Game Pass
Insider Gaming reported on Monday that last year’s Modern Warfare 3 will launch on Xbox Game Pass later this month, but did not reveal a specific date. According to the report, “As of press time, Insider Gaming was unable to verify the exact release date, but some sources indicate that it will be released in the second half of this month.”
The news was later confirmed by Windows Central, but Microsoft and Activision have yet to confirm any plans to add Modern Warfare 3 to Game Pass.
Currently, there are no Call of Duty games available on Microsoft’s gaming subscription service. Last year, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard games wouldn’t appear on Xbox Game Pass until 2024, as regulatory hurdles delayed the company’s acquisition of the Call of Duty maker. Spencer said at the time that Microsoft wouldn’t be able to complete the work needed to add Activision Blizzard games to the Game Pass catalog until the acquisition was finalized.
Black Ops 6 will be available on Game Pass on day one
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be released on October 25, becoming the first best-selling game in the series to be available on Game Pass on day one. Modern Warfare 3 ( review ), released on November 10 last year, is the latest game in the series. Older COD games are also expected to slowly make their way to Game Pass. However, Microsoft has not yet provided a specific timetable.
Earlier this week, Microsoft increased the price of Xbox Game Pass across regions and tiers ahead of Black Ops 6’s launch on the service. The company is also launching a new “Standard” tier for the subscription service, which will not offer new first-party games on launch day.
