Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz reportedly wants ‘out’ after being passed over for head coaching job

After another disappointing year with poor quarterback play, the Browns are once again in the market for a new head coach who could potentially fix those issues and lead the franchise back to strength.

The team reportedly found their man on Wednesday, hiring former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as the next head coach instead of their own defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Now, after searching for outside candidates, Schwartz may look elsewhere, though the Browns reportedly want to keep him, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

Schwartz was hired as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2023 after two seasons as a defensive assistant with the Tennessee Titans. Overall, he has 32 years of experience in the NFL, including five seasons as head coach with the Detroit Lions and 17 years as defensive coordinator with the Titans, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and, of course, the Browns.

The head coaching position will round out Schwartz’s NFL career, which he first entered the league at age 27 as a scout for the Browns. He held that position from 1993 to 1995 before joining the Baltimore Ravens as a defensive assistant. Now, he may be looking for a new start outside of the city where he began his NFL career.

While the team’s offensive struggles – especially at quarterback – have become an issue for the Browns, the defense continues to perform well under Schwartz.

In 2025, the team ranked 14th in points allowed, eighth in yards allowed, and fifth in yards per game. Star defensive end Myles Garrett set a single-season sack record with 23.0 sacks in 17 games and is now almost certain to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career.
