Breanna Stewart says she’s staying with Liberty: ‘Good luck to everybody else in free agency, but I’m not a part of that’

Three-time WNBA champion Breanna Stewart revealed on Wednesday’s podcast that she will continue playing for the New York Liberty.

Stewart said in an interview with Milwaukee Bucks co-host Myles Turner that while she is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, she won’t be leaving town.

“I’m going to be clear – I’m staying in New York,” Stewart said on “Stewie & Myles’ Game of Identification Games.”

Even though I am an unrestricted free agent, I do not plan to attend any free agent meetings. This is where my family settled. We’re pretty solid here. I’m going back to New York, that’s it.

“Good luck to everyone else in free agency, but I’m not involved in that.”

While Stewart hasn’t revealed contract details and the Liberty has yet to make an official announcement, it should result in a hefty return.

With most WNBA veterans signing contracts that run through the 2025 season before the collective bargaining agreement expires, Stewart, 31, is expected to benefit from the salary cap jump from $1.5 million to $7 million per team with the new deal. Supermax contracts will also rise from around $250,000 to $1.4 million.

According to Spotrac, Stewart will make $222,400 during the 2025 season.

Stewart has been with the Liberty for the past three seasons since entering the league in 2016 with the Seattle Storm. Since arriving in New York, Stewart has added a championship, league MVP, three-time All-Star selection, two-time WNBA All-Pro First Team selection and two-time WNBA All-Defensive First Team selection to her resume.

Stewart is one of five key free agents for the Liberty this offseason, including the top scorers on the roster behind Stewart: Sabrina Ionescu (18.2 points, 5.7 assists per game), Jonquel Jones (13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds), Emma Messman (13.4 points) and Natasha Crowder (10.1 points).

The Liberty made the WNBA playoffs in each of Stewart’s three seasons in New York, including the championship-winning 2024 season. In 2025, the team finished second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 27 wins and 17 losses and was eliminated in three games in the first round of the playoffs. Head coach Sandy Brondero was fired after three seasons, and longtime Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco was named her replacement.
