Information and Broadcasting Minister Apurva Chandra has urged big tech aggregators to share some of their revenue with digital news publishers that generate original content.
In a message sent to the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) conference on Friday, Chandra said Australia, Canada, France and the European Union have taken initiatives through their legislative bodies to strengthen competition commissions to ensure a fair distribution of revenue among creators News content and aggregator.
“For the news industry to thrive, it’s important that all of these digital news platforms, which are publishers of original content creators, earn their fair share of revenue from the big tech platforms acting as publishers for other people,” he said in a statement. said in a message to the DNPA meeting.
Chandra said that post-COVID, not only the digital news industry, but also the print news industry has financial health issues.
“It’s clear that if traditional journalism continues to suffer negatively, so does our fourth pillar, the future of journalism. So it’s also a question of journalism and credible content,” he said.
Traditional journalism has a history of serving the country, Chandra said.
“I know they have enough checks and balances in place to ensure correct and truthful news is getting out, and this is a great example of our established policy of self-regulation,” he said.
