BASEBALL: Cole’s 2-run single sparks Sequoyah in district rout

Derick Cole hit a 2-run single in the third inning to put the game away.

From the start of the period, the outcome was never in doubt, as Sequoia defeated Wyandotte 10-0 to open District 3A-6 play on Monday at the Pope Athletic Complex.

Cole finished the game with 2 hits and 2 RBIs, while Ryder Smalley drove in a team-high 3 runs in center field. Jace Miller also had 2 hits and the Eagles showed patience at the plate, driving in 6 runs and driving in 6 runs.

On the mound, Smalley took charge. The left-hander allowed just one hit in five shutout innings, striking out five and allowing four bases.

Defensively, Sequoia was flawless, making no mistakes, and Parker Dowell handled a team-high five chances on the field.

The Bears managed just one hit – Tayton Threet’s single in the second inning, and Avery Lofland added two stolen bases.

Miller singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, followed by a Lucas Howard error. Shortly after, Miller passed the ball again and scored. Howard stole the second ball and advanced to the third goal, giving Sequoia a 1-0 lead.

After Clayton Miller walked and stole second base, Smalley hit the ball to second base, allowing Howard to pass and extend the advantage to 2-0.

Smalley backed up the early cushion by retiring Wyandotte in order in the first and stranding a runner in the second after the Bears’ only hit.

The game took a decisive turn in the second half of the third quarter.

Smalley walked first, and both he and Gunner Allison had two steals to put runners on second and third. After Whyatt Cates walked to load the bases, Cole delivered the game’s decisive hit, a drive single to left that scored Allison and Smalley and extended the lead to 4-0.

Dowell then singled to the right and hit a pass that allowed Cates to score and take a 5-0 lead. Howard then hit the ball on a fielder’s choice, but before Wyandotte could escape the rim, Cole crossed the plate to make it 6-0.

Smalley, meanwhile, fought out of minor trouble in the third and fourth innings, stranding multiple baserunners with strikeouts and solid fielding.

The Eagles shut out the game in the fifth inning.

Cole drew a walk to start the inning and stole the second, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Witt Callery hit a single and Cole extended the lead to 7-0.

Dowell hit the ball and after Miller made a mistake, Howard singled to the right and Callery scored, making the score 8-0. With the runner still on the field, Smalley caught the shortstop’s throwing error, allowing both Miller and Reed to score, making it 10-0.

Smalley returned to the mound in the top half and struck out the Bears in order to secure the run win.

Sequoyah will travel to Wyandotte looking for a sweep on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
