According to reports, the main story of “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” will be 30 to 40 hours long. The game’s creative director reportedly said that players will be able to complete the campaign and earn points during this time. Recent games in the series have been criticized for their length due to their role-playing mechanics. For example, the main campaign of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla lasts nearly 60 hours.
How long is Assassin’s Creed: Shadows?
The information comes from gaming news and updates channel Genki on X, which interviewed Assassin’s Creed Shadows director Jonathan Dumont at a showcase event in Kyoto, Japan. According to Dumont, the upcoming game’s main story will be 30 to 40 hours long.
However, Dumont said that if players participate in side content, the gameplay time could be doubled, bringing the total gameplay time to more than 80 hours.
The creative director also said that Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will feature a new modern story involving the Animus, tying the game to future Assassin’s Creed games. Ubisoft vice president and Assassin’s Creed executive producer Marc-Alexis Coté made similar claims in November. Cotter said at the time that contemporary narrative in recent Assassin’s Creed games had become “repetitive” and irrelevant – “more of a side mission than an integral part of the overall experience.” He claimed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ modern story would be heading in a “new direction.”
Recent RPG-style Assassin’s Creed games have drawn criticism for being too long. Dumont served as creative director on Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which took more than 45 hours to complete the main story. The main content and side content in the game will easily take over 80 hours, with the completionist needing to spend over 100 hours in the game. Considering Dumont claimed that Assassin’s Creed: Shadows’ main missions will be 30-40 hours long, it’s possible that the upcoming game will be shorter than Odyssey.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will be released on March 20 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. Last month, some physical copies of the game broke their release dates and leaked ahead of schedule, leading some players to post spoilers and other game details online.
Amid the poor sales performance of Star Wars: Desperados, Ubisoft is banking on Shadows to be its next hit game. The company said last month that pre-orders for the game were in line with 2018’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, the second-largest launch in the Assassin’s Creed series.
