ACC commissioner now is defending Notre Dame with the CFP drama

It’s been quite the whirlwind this week for Notre Dame, the ACC and the College Football Playoff, and it didn’t stop on Wednesday.

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips insisted earlier this week that no coordinator planned to push Miami into the CFP, but now he favors expanding the number of teams that qualify. When Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua wanted a 16-team field, Phillips suddenly asked for the same thing.

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger posted on social media that Phillips believes exploring expansion options should be discussed at a committee meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also agreed with Bevacqua about reducing select programming, but he hadn’t said that before.

I think a lot of that comes from realizing that Notre Dame is a very important part of his conference even though the Irish don’t support them football-wise. This is another twist in the drama we saw last week, and it might not be over yet.
