Owning a car that offers good fuel economy is one of the easier ways to save some fuel bills. The more efficient a car is, the less fuel consumes during daily driving. Let’s take a look at some of the most efficient gas cars you can buy right now.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio – 26.68 km

Maruti has long been on the market with some very fuel-efficient cars, and Celerio continues that trend. At 26.68 kmpl, the hatchback is the most efficient petrol car you can buy right now. Part of that is down to Celerio’s new 1.0-liter engine, which now features dual injectors and cooled exhaust gas recirculation for a more controlled combustion process. The Celerio is also light, with a curb weight 800 and 825 kg, depending on the variant. This is the most fuel-efficient AMT version, with a manual return of a lower 26 kmpl.

Honda City e:HEV – 26.5kmpl

Honda’s Spring has landed the five most fuel-efficient cars with the new City e:HEV hybrid. The compact sedan achieves a whopping 26.5kmpl claims thanks to Honda’s new e:HEV technology, which pairs a petrol engine with two electric motors to power the front wheels. Unlike a mild-hybrid system, Honda’s e:HEV is a potent hybrid, meaning enables the city to run entirely on electricity at low city speeds, with the engine only kicking in when the battery is depleted – It charges the battery and doesn’t send power to the wheels. It’s only when the speed increases that you find the engine powering the wheels directly.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – 25.19 km

Maruti’s tall boy hatchback received a new heart as part of an update earlier this year. In addition to some cosmetic updates, the Wagon R also features Maruti’s new 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter DualJet engines with engine start-stop technology for improved fuel economy. The 1.0-liter AMT model is the more fuel-efficient of the two, with a claimed 25.19 km compared to the 1.2 AMT’s 24.43 km. Meanwhile, a 1.0-litre manual transmission is good for 24.35 kmpl.

The Dzire was once known as the most fuel-efficient petrol sedan sold in India, although has now taken up the pie in new cities. The Dzire has been one of Maruti’s best-selling cars in the country, alongside its hatchback sibling, the Swift. The 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine is one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines in the segment, producing 89 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. Like the other Maruti models on the list, the AMT model is the most fuel efficient, with the manual model being slightly less fuel efficient at 23.26 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – 23.76 km

Notes

The Swift tops the current list of the most fuel-efficient petrol cars on the market, with a claimed 23.76km for the AMT model and 23.20km for the manual. Maruti’s hot hatchback, currently in its third generation, underwent a mid-cycle refresh early last year, introducing some new equipment and, more importantly, an 89 bhp DualJet petrol engine. The new powerplant brings an upgrade in power output as well as improved mileage, with the old 1.2 mill claiming 21.21 kmpl.
