Pocatello, Idaho (ABC4) — A gunman opened fire in Pocatello, Idaho, on Friday, killing three people and injuring two others.
At around 2:40 pm on April 3, police received reports that three people had been shot on Tank Farm Road in Ball County, northern Idaho. Emergency crews arrived and found two people dead and one injured.
The injured were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Authorities later located a suspect hiding near the Portneuf River. While on scene, officers heard shots fired and found another injured person suffering from a gunshot wound. The person was airlifted to hospital.
Officers at the scene reportedly attempted to negotiate with the suspect before he brandished a gun. Law enforcement then responded with deadly force and shot the man.
The suspect died on the spot.
“Our hearts go out to the families of those killed today and those recovering at the hospital,” said Ball County Sheriff Kasey Kendall. “We are grateful for the quick response of our deputies and area partners who worked to ensure our community was not further harmed.”
Idaho Falls police have been assigned to lead the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force’s investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The investigation into the initial shooting will be led by Idaho State Police, the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released. No further information is available at this time.
