Drafting players to fill open positions has become a less common strategy among NFL teams in recent years, as many teams have chosen to focus on acquiring the best talent and placing them wherever they can get reps. The New Orleans Saints have long focused heavily on their offensive and defensive lines, which has helped in some situations and hurt in others.
Their most glaring need heading into April is definitely at wide receiver, needing a more consistent option to play alongside Chris Olave and DeVaughn Wheeler. This can be seen in their pre-draft meeting list, as they have met with a large number of receivers so far. One of the latest names to join the organization is Texas Tech deep threat Reggie Virgil.
Vergil seems to be generating a lot of interest around the league, which is understandable considering his performance over the past two years. In 2024, he caught 41 passes for 816 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 19.9 yards per catch, leading the MAC. He transferred to Texas Tech from Miami, Ohio in 2025 and continued to put up solid numbers, catching 57 passes for 705 yards and six touchdowns, showcasing his speed and ability in the red zone.

A stocky 6-foot-3, 187-pounder, he posted a 4.57-second 40-yard dash, a 1.58-second 10-yard split, a 36-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-7 broad jump at the NFL Scouting Combine. While not outstanding at the position, all of this is perfectly acceptable for his size and size, especially considering the skills he’s shown over time.
He may end up drafting higher than many expect, and if that’s the case, it will be interesting to see if the Saints pull the trigger and acquire him.
